The Tribunal

The Tribunal is headed by a President, who is a lawyer, and two Deputy Presidents. There are over 40 Tribunal Members (including three Presidential Members) with a variety of backgrounds such as lawyers, educators, psychologists, social workers, counsellors, mental health practitioners and medical practitioners.  Most also have personal experience of a person with impaired decision-making capacity.  All of these positions, with the exception of the President’s, are part-time and the President can determine which Tribunal Members will hear a particular matter. A panel can consist of one, two or three members, depending on the complexity of the circumstances.  The Registrar of the Tribunal is able to hear non-contentious matters.  Nearly half the Tribunal Members are located outside of Brisbane.

The Registry

The main function of the Tribunal Registry is to support the work of the Tribunal through managing applications, supporting hearings and providing business services to the Tribunal.  The functions carried out by the Tribunal Registry are vastly different from those normally undertaken by Court and Tribunal registries.  This is because of the protective nature of this jurisdiction and the Tribunal’s statutory responsibility to ensure it has all the relevant information necessary to assist the Tribunal to make their decision.
